Maps of Hungary, 1900
Genealogists realize how important it is to know the historical context in
which their ancestors lived. The rather diverse scenario of ethnic /
religious groups of the Carpathian Basin / Eastern Europe has been an
engine to substantial historical changes in the region many times in the 20th
century, and affects liaisons even in our days. Acknowledging this,
researchers have dedicated numerous projects to explore the situation and to
propose some conclusions.
Beginning their research family historians in Hungary are often striked by
the fact that their ancestry were e.g. German. Digging a bit more into it,
they probably find histories of the Danube Swabians, available even on the
internet. However, there have been less pictorial information on the web.
Maps here would like to promote discovering Hungary's past by showing the
most important demographic and social factors of the country in 1900. 1900 was a
year when a national census, conducted every 10 years, took place. Its
results were published in numerous volumes. One of these volumes
summarizes information and projects dust statistical data onto maps.
Maps make it possible to learn the situation quickly. Furthermore looking
paralel at maps with different thematic content makes it
possible to easily discover correlations. Even without complex statistical
analysis one can pinpoint some obvious features.
Counties and cities serve as data units or cells on the maps.
